Irina-Camelia Begu crushes Julia Glushko in the second round of the Andalucia Tennis Experience
Sixth seed Romanian, Irina-Camelia Begu wiped out Julia Glushko of Israel from the second round qualifiers of the Andalucia Tennis Experience at Marbella, Spain on Sunday night. The Romanian concluded her assertive victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, taking
just one hour and twelve minutes of to advance to the final round of the qualifying draws.
The 21-year-old Israeli was clearly outplayed in every segment of the game by her superior opponent and appeared in no sort of form during the contest. Glushko served very well, reaching 71 percent accuracy, but conceded plenty of unforced errors in the
game, including four expensive double faults, which wore her out later in the match-up.
Although Begu did not hit her serve marks as accurately as her opponent did, the Romanian was outstanding on winning points in the game. She won 22 out of 24 first serve points and registered four serve breaks in the contest, without dropping her serve a
single time. Begu’s defence was unbreakable and she faced no break points from her rival.
Glushko’s errant game play provided 14 opportunities to the Romanian to break serve, but she cashed in just four chances which proved sufficient for her victory. The Israeli was sloppy with her foot work, which Begu exploited with great mastery, pinching
plenty of winners by hitting drop shots close to the net.
The 20-year-old Romanian had a ballistic start to the opener, delivering 81 percent first serve on target and winning 20 out of 21 total serve points in the set. Glushko delivered most of her serve on target, but her bleak defence could not stop Begu from
cracking winners down the line throughout the opener. The Romanian had nine break chances but she frittered away eight of them before converting one.
Glushko hung in the first set for a while, but her position remained awkward throughout. A critical serve break in the eighth game proved decisive for Begu, who closed out the opening set at 6-4 to lead the contest 1-0.
Things got even worse for the Israeli in the next set, as the confident Romanian completed her demolition job by winning 26 out of 37 total points in the second set. Begu broke her opponent in every serve game, stinging three consecutive serve breaks and
driving the Israeli out of the contest convincingly. She closed out the second set at 6-0, with a cracking down-the-line winner to move a step closer to the main draws of the Women’s Tennis Association tournament at Marbella.
Begu needs to beat Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine in the final round of the qualifiers before she can compete in the main draws. Koryttseva was successful against the second seed Spaniard, Nuria Llagostera Vives in the second round.
