Irina-Camelia Begu defeats Anastasija Sevastova in quarterfinal – Texas Open 2011
Romaine Irina-Camelia Begu defeated Latvian Anastasija Sevastova in the quarter final of the Texas Open 2011. The players were meeting for the second time on hard courts of Hilton DFW Lakes in Grapevine, Texas. In simply 79 minutes
of play world number 48 Begu had outwitted 21 year old Sevastova with a straight set victory of 6-3, 6-4.
The last time the two had contested against each other was on clay courts in Cuneo, Italy in 2009 where Sevastova had won the match with a 7-5 6-4 victory and gained one up. The Higher Power had granted another chance to 21 year-old
Beg which she was able to avail on the hard courts of Hilton DFW Lakes in Grapevine, Texas.
Commencing the first set was Begu who although, had only hit 39% of the first serves on target, had a geometric precision and started off with a great start; she managed to take the lead by smashing 5 aces and bagged the first
game without any opposition. She then went on to achieve a walloping 77% win of her first serve, along with an above average 55% win in the second, she was able to accomplish a total of 64% in the total service points.
Mean while, the 21 year-old Latvian had a consistent 50% win of her first and second serve, which resulted in her attaining 10 out of 20 points, making it a 50% win of the total service points.
Although the Latvia was able to achieve 50% of her service points, she had an extremely poor return that won her 36% of her total return points.
By winning 67% of her break points, the Romanian was able to break her opponent once more than her adversary and was also able to bag the set by accomplishing 58% of her total set points.
As Begu had powered through the first set, she set the tone for the second and even though, she had struck a double fault she smashed two aces.
Amidst the second set Begu had bagged a 55% win in the total service and return points of the set, while, Sevastova had a 45% in both her returns. Thus, the 21 year-old Romaine had a better serve and an exceptional return which
enabled her to accomplish a 55% of her total set points.
Moreover, by breaking her opponent’s serve 3 out of 5 times Begu has able to secure a place in the semi final of the Texas Open 2011.
