Irina-Camelia Begu outfoxes French Pauline Parmentier in the 1st round – Texas Open 2011
Battling it out on the hard courts of the Hilton DFW Lakes in Grapevine, Texas for 1 hour and 15 minutes was Romaine Irina-Camelia Begu and the French Pauline Parmentier. Begu triumphed over Parmentier with a straight set victory
of 6-1, 6-3 on 21st of August during the first round at the Texas Open 2011.
The two had taken up the gauntlet twice this year; last time they met was at the Marseille Tennis Open in France, where Parmentier had bagged yet another victory and had won twice in their last two meetings. Leading in the head
to head 2-0, this was the third time the two met and surprisingly Begu finally came out successful.
The 20 year-old (Begu) performed beautifully as she bagged the first set in just 30 minutes of play. She committed minimum errors during her serve and struck only one double fault.
With her strong forearm she was to win 14 out of 20 service points, making it 70% of her total service points. While, her opponent started off poorly and was unable to play returns on Begu’s serve and hence, was only able to achieve
305 of her total returns.
Later her serve plummeted and she was only able to attain 11 out of 25 points in her total service points, which amassed to only a 44% win against Begu, who was able to win her French opponent’s games and return with well placed
drop shots to win a commendable 56% of her total returns.
In addition, the world number 48 (Begu) was able to save all her break points and managed to break her adversary’s serve three times to her advantage, while, Parmentier was unable to find her rhythm and was only capable of saving
5 out of the 8 break points on her serve. Hence, capitalizing on her opponent’s and given her statistical edge Begu was able to bag the set by accomplishing 62% of her total set points.
Once Begu beat her old fangled rival in the first set, there was no stopping her now, and the crowd cheered her on as she was in her groove, winning 59% of her total service points against the French, who was barely attained 14
out of 34 points in the total return points.
Having lost the first set displayed a rusty serving and returning ability by Parmentier, as she was unable to give an above average performance in her serve, which restricted her to winning only 53% of her total service points
against the Romaine who had 9 out of 19 points, making it a 47% win in her total returns of the set.
Although, Begu struck 6 double faults, she was able to save 75% of her break points and capitalized on a 100 percent of her rival’s break points and was able to secure a spot in the second round by accomplishing 5 more points than
Parmentier.
