Irina-Camelia Begu rallies past Timea Bacsinszky in round one – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Fourth seeded Irina-Camelia Begu required three sets to outmuscle the Swiss rising star, Timea Bacsinszky, at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012 on Monday. She clobbered up a 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4 victory over the world number 333 in the opening round at this WTA
(Women’s Tennis Association) clay court tournament taking place in Acapulco, Mexico.
Ranked 53rd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Begu showed awe-inspiring skills to overpower the Swiss for the first time in their third encounter. She not only lowered the trail in the head-to-head series by 1-2 against Bacsinszky but also advanced
into the second round at this International level tournament.
The 21-year-old made a nervy entry at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess and suffered the first blow in the opening game. She recovered in the proceeding game but lost her serve again, subsequently trailing at 1-3. However, she stayed calm and not only snatched
her break back in the sixth game but also exchanged two more serve breaks to enforce a tie-breaker. Begu dominated in it and clinched the opener with a 7-6(3) score line.
Bacsinszky carried her losing ways in the following set and gifted away her serve in the opening game after failing to save the only breakpoint she faced. After trailing 1-3, the Swiss unleashed flurry of massive forehands and backhands to go on a five games
rampage, sealing the equaliser by winning six games to three.
The match was standing at a knife edge and Begu was unsuccessful in finding her rhythm, ultimately losing her serve in the opening game. However, she re-focused quickly and stroke out the following four games in a row. Despite exchanging two serve breaks
after this, the Romanian pulled out the decider with a 6-4 win.
Up next for the fourth seeded Romanian is the conqueror of the match between the Czech rising star Eva Birnerova and the Georgian competitor Anna Tatishvili.
Eighth seeded Alberta Brianti will accompany Begu in the round of 16. She lost her serve eight times but broke Alize Cornet’s serve 10 times to seal the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 success in their first outing.
