Irina Camelia Begu triumphs over Anabel Medina Garrigues in the semis – Budapest Grand Prix 2011
Seventh seeded Romanian Irina Begu stunned fifth seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues in straight sets at Women’s Singles – POLI-FARBE Grand Prix, an International level WTA Premier event held on the clay courts in Budapest,
Hungary. She registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the 28-year-old Spaniard to secure a final spot on Saturday.
Ranked 77th in the Sony Ericson WTA Premier rankings, Begu took one hour and forty-three minutes to upset the Spanish number one, ranked 34 places above her, on their first meeting.
The Bucharest native made quick in-roads as she got the desiderated break in the third game and took the initial lead. She then broke the Spaniard’s serve again in the seventh game and was serving for the match in the eighth game
before gifting away her serve due to forehand errors. Begu then held her serve in the tenth game to seal the set by winning six games to four in almost fifty minutes.
She clobbered a lower first serve share of 61 percent as compared to Spaniard’s 85 percent but registered an impressive 64 percent win on it. Begu saved one out of two breakpoint conceded and converted two out of three breakpoint
opportunities to her advantage.
20-year-old Romanian carried her winning ways in the final set and she earned the coveted break in the third game after holding her opening serve to take the lead. Begu then held on to her remaining serves and exchanged a break
in the end to eventually bag the set with a 6-4 win.
She produced a similar first serve share of 63 percent and earned a plausible 65 percent win on it. Begu converted both breakpoint opportunities to her advantage and saved one out of two breakpoints conceded.
Begu is currently in great shape as she made final berths at Marbella WTA and Marseille ITF and she clinched the title at Cali ITF event earlier this season.
Up next for the blooming Romanian is the winner of the match between the top seeded Italian Roberta Vinci and the third seeded Czech Klara Zakopalova.
