Irina Falconi and Monica Puig gain main draw acceptance at the 2011 Family Circle Cup
American tennis pro Irina Falconi managed to defeated French opponent Stephanie Foretz Gacon in a closely contested match in the final round of the qualifying singles for the main draw of this year’s Charleston event. The
match was extremely close, with Falconi barely scraping into the main draw with a scoreline of 7-6(5), 7-5. The American player took one hour and forty minutes to defeat her opponent.
Falconi is currently 28 spots shy of the Women’s Tennis Association Top 100 at World Number 128. This is an impressive achievement for the pro, who is only 20 years old and joined the tour as a professional just one year
ago in 2010. She is right-handed, and has lost eight of her nineteen matches so far. On the other side of the court, Stephanie Foretz Gacon is currently 29 years old and has been part of the WTA Tour since 1997. She is ranked World Number 146 at the moment.
Despite her many years as a professional player, she has not won a career title yet.
Both players scored two aces each during the match, and also committed four double faults apiece. Falconi managed to break Foretz Gacon six times out of nine break point opportunities, whereas she was broken just five times
out of eleven. The player won the match with thirteen points more than her opponent could score.
Irina Falconi will now compete against Slovakian tennis pro Magdalena Rybarikova in the first round of the main draw of the 2011 Family Circle Cup.
German tennis player Tatjana Malek suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, as the latter made her way into the main draw of the event. Puig, who entered the qualifying singles of the Family
Circle Cup as a wild card, fought through three challenging sets to secure her place in the main draw of the tournament. It took her two hours and forty-five minutes to achieve a winning scoreline 0f 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
The Puerto Rican tennis player is just seventeen years old, and is currently ranked World Number 381. She has participated in just seven matches so far this year, and has lost only one. On the other hand, Tatjana Malek is
currently ranked World Number 142 and was expected to win this match. She is a 23-year-old pro player, but seems to be having some very bad luck; she has only won two of nine matches prior to this tournament.
Puig managed to score four aces during the match, and committed just one double fault. She won the match with a satisfactory 52 per cent of the total points.
Puig will take on Chinese tennis pro Zheng Jie in the first round of the 2011 Family Circle Cup.
