Irina Khromacheva downs Daneika Borthwick in Girls’ Singles 3rd round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Seeded as number three in the tournament, Irina Khromacheva of Russia won her third round matchup against Daneika Borthwick of Great Britain in the Girls’ Singles category at the Wimbledon Championships on Thursday.
The 16-year-old Russian took one hour to conclude her straight sets victory 6-3, 6-2, over the Briton on Court 18 of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, to make it into the quarter-finals
of the Grand Slam event.
It appeared a pretty one-sided contest all the way, with Khromacheva dominating every bit of the game to come out as the winner in the end. The Russian continued her blistering form at Wimbledon to force her way to the final eight
of the tournament on Thursday.
Despite of a below par serve accuracy of just 52 per cent, Khromacheva was phenomenal with bagging crucial points on regular occasions. She reeled off 27 out of 34 first serve points in the matchup, while firing seven thudding
aces en route to victory.
Borthwick bettered her opponent with her first serve accuracy of 64 per cent but utterly failed to crack in a serve break in the entire contest. The Briton had break opportunities on four different occasions but her errant stroke
play didn’t allow her to convert a single one of them. She dropped serve three out of six times in the match to let Khromacheva away with a comprehensive victory over her and granted her pass to the quarter-finals of the mega event.
The Russian was off to a flyer in the opening set, launching a series of attacking manoeuvres to put her opponent under pressure early. Her serve precision was pathetically low to a mere 36 per cent but she still secured a12 out
of 14 points on it to stay on top of the contest. Borthwick was in all sorts of confusion right from the start and squandered all the four break opportunities she received in the first set. Khromacheva continued with her aggressive game play to seal the first
set at 6-3 to get a strong position in the competition.
Russian domination continued its full flow in the following set as well, while Borthwick slumped further to propel Khromacheva to victory. The Russian broke her opponent’s serve twice before she finished of the contest at 6-2 to
book a date with the fifth seed Canadian, Eugenie Bouchard, in the quarter-final of the Grand Slam tournament. The Canadian was successful against Krista Hardebeck of the United States in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, in the third round draws.
