Iris Wang and Rena Wang proceed to Women’s Doubles quarter-finals of the Russian Open Grand Prix
Iris Wang and Rena Wang of USA reserved their place in the Women’s Doubles quarter-final after beating Russia’s Anastasia Chervaykova and Maria Korobeyinkova, in the first round of the Russian Open Grand Prix, at Vladivostok, Russia, on Thursday, June 30,
2011.
Iris and Rena played impressive badminton against the local opponents and managed to win the thrilling rubber-set contest by taking 51 minutes of court time.
In the opening set of the match, both sides entertained the huge crowd at the indoor arena in Vladivostok, by putting up a fabulous show of top-quality badminton. Iris and Rena were playing with precision in the first game against the Russians, who were
also playing well but were not quick at the net. Despite the attacking start from their challengers, the Russians raised their game and managed a slight lead at the interval by reaching 11-10.
After the break, Iris and Rena tried to catch up the game by becoming fast at the net, but the defence and control of the Russians was superb. The American duo lost the opening game in 21 minutes, with a margin of 16-21.
In the following set, Iris and Rena changed their tactics and started to put variations in their strokes. They started to attack in the middle of their opponents’ court and earned many points with their net killings. Their aggressive play helped them in
levelling the match, as they clinched the second game by a 21-15 difference, in 16 minutes.
In the final set of this thrilling encounter, the USA shuttlers gained momentum and controlled the pace of the game right from the start. Anastasia and Maria tried to catch up with the pace of their rivals, but they lost their control and started to throw
away points by playing negative strokes.
Iris and Rena wasted no time in finishing-off the third set with a 21-10 margin, in just 14 minutes. The American pair emerged as the winners in this interesting three-set fight with a 16-21, 21-15 and 21-10 margin.
