Pan Am Junior 2012 – Badminton News
Women’s Singles expert Iris Wang played flawless badminton and trounced Haramara Gaitan in group stage of XXI Pan Am Junior Team Event on Sunday, July 22, 2012.
This encounter was part of a Group B match between USA and Mexico which was played at Sherwood Park in Alberta, Canada.
The young but talented US shuttler fetched a vital point for its team by sealing a splendid win with 21-14 and 21-9 score on the board. She played with great precision and took just 30 minutes to register this straight-set victory.
Meanwhile, the Mexican campaigner could not withstand her rival’s intensive campaign and surrendered tamely in both segments of the tussle.
Iris Wang launched a brisk attack straight away in the opening game and pushed her opponent on the back-foot.
The 18-year-old shuttler showed complete command over her craft and dazzled the opposing shuttler with a lustrous performance.
In the first half, she laid the foundation of her supremacy by gathering four valuable points without any interruption and maintained this upper hand all the way to mid-game break.
Though, she trod carefully in the beginning but a giant leap after 4-3 took her to a commanding position of 8-3.
She did not squander this initial lead and kept pushing her challenger in all areas of the court. She prevailed in next couple of rallies and placed a mountainous total of 11-5 before the interval.
However, later part of the game was not a dead contest as the other female shuttler also showed her spark and put up a decent fight.
Haramara Gaitan narrowed the gap by ruling in four consecutive rallies and then mounted pressure with two vital points after 13-9.
At this stage, Iris Wang switched on the best and strengthened her grip with 16-11. She bagged five out of ending eight points and wrapped this set with 21-14 margin.
The Mexican campaigner could not come back after this horrendous start and lost the second set in a disgraceful manner.
Meanwhile, Iris Wang capitalised her initial advantage and transformed 1-0 match score into straight-set victory by registering an indomitable figure of 21-9.
This timely win boosted confidence of other US campaigners and they sealed 5-0 win against Mexico in group stage of the event.
