  1. How long ago? My grandparents were born BEFORE the Civil War, but here in the States.

You should start by asking all your living relatives for as much information as they can provide.  If you are here in the States, go to a public library.  Ours has both www.ancestry.com and www.heritagequest.com. use (no library card required).

Another place to check out is any of the Mormon's Family History Centers.  They allow people to search for their family history (and, NO, they don't try to convert you).

A third option is one of the following websites:

    http://www.searchforancestors.com/...

    http://www.censusrecords.net/?o_xid=2739...

    http://www.usgenweb.com/

    http://www.census.gov/

    http://www.rootsweb.com/

    http://www.ukgenweb.com/

    http://www.archives.gov/

    http://www.familysearch.org/

    http://www.accessgenealogy.com/...

    http://www.cyndislist.com/

    http://www.geni.com/

Cyndi's has the most links to genealogy websites, whether ship's passenger lists, ancestors from Africa, ancestors from the Philippines, where ever and whatever.

Of course, you may be successful by googling: "john doe, born 1620, plimouth, massachusetts" as an example.

    Good luck and have fun!

P.S. Here is one dealing with Irish ancestry:

  2. If you know her full maiden name and where exactly she was from, you could try contacting the churches there for their records.

  3. Check with the Mormons...They have expertise on such stuff

  4. If she married in the UK her father's name will be on the marriage certificate, along with his occupation (which could be useful) and her age at the time of marriage.  This should give you a starting point!  Also did she come with family or was she alone?  It might be worth checking the registers in the UK for the parish she lived in (for example for any marriages of siblings).

Civil registration was in effect at the time of her birth in Ireland, so if she's got an unusual name you might be able to track down her birth certificate.

  5. dont know her

  6. should be on her death certificate, if she is no longer living. Depending on when she was born, she may also have had a birth certificate there in Ireland.  You don't indicate where she went TO.. if the US, she may have a social security application, or she might have been naturalized citizen.

As for online resources.. I have not worked that much with records in the UK, but I have looked at www.genuki.org and it seems to be solid.

You might edit your question to give more specific details.. the sources that will be best for you will depend on the dates involved, and the places.

  7. I havn't tried either of these sites but they look quite good. I hope that you have luck finding what you are looking for. One of my mothers uncles did a big search on our family heritage and he gave out the information to our entire family.

    Good luck.
