Irish Andy Lee collects easy win via second round knockout over Mexican Saul Duran - Boxing news
Andy Lee, the current NABA and NABF middleweight champion, reached one step closer to getting a WBC title shot after collecting an impressive second round knockout win over Mexican veteran Saul Duran, on Saturday March 10, 2012.
The ring for the showdown was setup at Suburban Collection Showplace situated in Novi, Michigan, United States and the bout was organised and promoted by Emanuel Steward of Kronk Boxing.
The non-title bout was almost a handicap fight for Andy Lee since Saul, 39, did not get enough time to prepare for the bout. Saul, who has accumulated much experience in his resume, was considered a tough competition for the surging 27-year-old Andy but
the result and the way the whole brawl went depicted a total different scenario.
Saul, widely known as the ‘Baby’, has been in a total 61 bouts and came out victorious in 40. The Mexican orthodox proudly held many titles but unfortunately has always been unsuccessful in retaining or defending them.
Despite his impressive resume, the veteran was on a serious declining trend. He has lost six of his last 10 battles and surprisingly most of them by pugilists who are at rookie level. Andy, on the contrary, easily intimidates his opponents by his 27 career
wins in total 28 bouts.
The southpaw Lee has lost just one bout to Brian Vera but later on, in his second engagement with Vera before Saul, the Irish fight-machine nailed him to prove that he is invincible. The bout kicked off and the whole first round witnessed Saul getting brutally
battered by the knockout specialist.
Saul got so much pummelled that he was unable to defend himself since Lee continuously pierced through his defence and connected heavy punches. The second round initiated and nobody knew that things will end so soon.
Lee bombarded Saul by powerful jabs connecting the Mexican’s body and head and after the passage of just 54 seconds, the Mexican ‘Baby’ lost his consciousness and went to sleep causing the referee to end the bout in Andy’s favour.
After the bout, Andy excitedly commented, “They should have let the fight go longer. Let him get knocked out. A lot of people came to watch this fight. I would have liked more of a contest. But he took the fight at short notice, so I kind of understand.”
Andy, who is ranked as the second best middleweight by World Boxing Organisation, has decided to take on WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Junior, the Mexican legend who has rules the middleweight division.
