Irish Rugby Football Union signs Cian Healey
Cian Healy has penned a new international deal with IRFU that will allow him to play two more seasons in Ireland till 2013. Ireland based Rugby players are currently being contracted by International Rugby Football Union. Donnoch O’Callaghan and Ronan O’Gara
got recently awarded with Munster’s contract and now Healy is the lucky one.
Cian Healy an Irish Rugby union player was born in Dublin, Ireland on 7th October 1987. The 23 year old has been playing for Clontarf RFC and Belvedere College SJ where he bagged Leinster Senior Cup in 2005. And four years later we saw Healy playing for
Leinster team in 2009 for the Heineken Cup.
That year Leinster won the cup after a fierce match with Leicester Tigers, with a score difference of 19 – 16. Leinster’s prop was called up by the Irish national squad for the Six Nations Championship in 2008. He had already played in Ireland A team before
this and had won the Churchill Cup in 2009. He made his international debut in 2009 against Australia at Croke Park and was highly appraised for his superb performance by the coaches.
Since then he has kept his game up and is considered as a competent character in his team. Healey said that these couple of weeks has been good for him and he is looking forward to just focus on playing well for his club. At the same time, he also wants
to be keeping up with his international career.
Phillip Browne, the Chief Executive for IRFU said, “With a fixture list of potentially over 40 matches per season and with even more games in overseas leagues where we would have no influence on the game time for Irish players, it is vital that we continue
to work to retain players to play within Ireland in the provinces.”
This clearly explains the stance of IRFU for the local Irish players. Declan Kidney, considers it to be welcome news for Cian Healy, who has flourished really well in past two years.
He said, “He has approached every challenge with the same hard working attitude and if he continues to do this he can become an even better player.”
