Irish U19 Open 2012: Joshua Magee topples Bruno Carvalho in Men’s Singles U19 semi-final
Ireland’s spirited shuttler Joshua Magee proved his elevated craft and entertained his home fans by reaching into Men’s Singles U19 final after showing exit to his higher ranked opponent Bruno Carvalho of Portugal in semi-final showdown at the Irish U19
Open 2012 on Saturday, September 8, in Ireland.
The in-form Joshua, who is the third seeded player in the main draw of the championship, continued his impressive performance on court and overpowered Bruno who was the top seeded shuttler in the tournament.
The lower ranked Irish player showed his brilliance in all areas of the court and remained successful in giving a severe lesson to his top seeded rival in straight games with a reasonable margin by working hard for 34 minutes on court.
In the meanwhile, the higher ranked Bruno tried his level best to put up strong show but failed to push his opponent on back foot and remained struggling. He lost the battle without showing any considerable performance and also without taking any game.
The opening set was quite thrilling when the underdog Joshua proved a tough nut to crack for the top seeded Portuguese shuttler who put in everything into his effort to take charge of rallies.
Both contestants kept the crowd engaging all the way to the end of opening half when they were neck-to-neck on score board.
After the one-minute interval, the intensity of the battle grew bigger as both shuttlers kept the pace of rallies high by taking the bird early and remained close until the score reached at the nail-biting stage of 21-21.
At this breath-taking stage, the local shuttler proved his tremendous craft as he played smart badminton while keeping the bird low at net and managed to finish off the set with a 23-21 score on the board.
The second game was not that tough for the Irish shuttler who became confident after the winning the opening set and managed an impressive lead until the mid-game interval.
After the break, Joshua continued playing attacking and dominating badminton and finished off the set with a convincing margin of 21-16.
The third seeded Joshua won this interesting semi-final battle in straight sets with a 23-21 and 21-16 score on the board.
