I'm interested in eventually (hopefully) getting one of these amazing hounds, with the recent research I've done I've found a very small amount of breeders in the states. I haven't made any phone calls yet, I was wondering

A) if you own one what REPUTABLE breeder did you purchase your hound from

B) if you don't own one but happen to know of a REPUTABLE breeder.

  1. Atleast your wanting to get one from a reputable breeder, and not a pet store. =) I think that is great!

My brothers best friend has an Irish Wolfhound named Murphey. They are so big! Murphey has got to be the biggest chicken though, and it's so funny. He is a sweet heart though and I hope to get an Irish Wolfhound rescue in the future as well.

I went ahead and did a search on Petfinder.com for Irish Wolfhounds. It is suprising to see how many purebreds they have!

  2. Go through the AKC website to the Irish Wolfhound Club of america and contact their breeder referral person.  They will get you to people with puppies, young adults and rescue.

I am in MN and there are several quality breeders here

  3. We have 2 female Irish Wolfhounds.  One came from Northern California, and the other came from Ontario, Canada.  The first is not well bred.  She is a pet quality we got before we knew the breed well.  But she is very special and we wouldn't trade her for anything, but the quality is not there.  We found an ad in a dog magazine when we got her.  Most reputable breeders don't advertise.  They have waiting lists for their pups.  Beware of anyone trying hard to sell, or prices too low.  The second comes from very good breeding and I drove clear across the country to get her.  Like you, I live in an area without many breeders.  We probably have 35 hounds or more in our club and more than half come from out of state.  So I started visiting breeders when I traveled.  I would just call ahead and ask if I could visit their kennel and learn about the dogs.  Most were very open to allowing this.  I learned so much about the breed from these people!  Be open to learning.  These breeders are picky, and they should be. We attended shows and volunteered to walk and hold dogs for the IW breeders and got to know some.  And eventually I was in Detroit on business, and drove over to Ontario and put a deposit on a pup-to-be out of the then IW specialty best of breed and a female out of the best kennel in Canada.  People won't refer people they don't know to breeders so I would suggest you go meet Irish Wolfhound people where they are.   Where are they?  Shows.  St Patrick's Day Parades.  Irish Festivals.  We also have people in our state (AZ) join our Irish Wolfhound Club Yahoo group so they can get attend posted functions, get to know owners, and thru them get educated and meet breeders.  So google irish wolfhound clubs for your state and see what you can find.

Good Luck.  Nobody is sorry when they get their first Irish Wolhound.  They just start looking for another one.  :)
