Irish countryside?

Hi all,

I am living here in Dublin, but I still don’t know the country very well. I am starting to know the and west. I’ve been in to Galway, Connemara and Co. Clare already. I am trying to get recommendation from local people or from those who know better than me, on where to go for a weekend break for:

* Fishing or angling, could be coast, lake or river;

* A country style family house or farmhouse. I’ve heard there are some places in Ireland where you can stay in a very typical Irish house, such as cottage. I am interested in something very rural.

It could be anywhere in Ireland. But it should be in an easy place to reach through public transportation (train, bus, short taxi run). I know there are tons of options on the web, but I would like to hear from people who have been in such places.

Go to Boyle, County Roscommon, there's lots fishing goes on due to the amount of Loughs, if you want a B+B I can highly recommend "Cesh Corran" in Boyle town ( more of a village I'd say) it's run by a lady named Mary Cooney, you'll find a warm welcome, very good food. and a high standard of furnishings and comfort all at reasonable rates.

Or you could try further up the coast in Sligo, Strandhill is especially nice and on the coast, can't say we've stayed there but we always pay it a visit when were over

Most of the cottages for hire are out in the sticks so you'd be needing a car

The only place i can tthink that I've been to from England is County Clair but you've already been thier.

Hey, everyone knows that Wexford is the place to go for holidays, especially fishing and the like. Look it up, loads of B and B's on the bus route from Dublin. You should especially try Rosslare or Carne. Amazing angling down there and a tarin or bus goes there from Dub, 2 and a half ahours at most. Couldnt get much better.

fishing ,local pubs , people, there is only one county,Leitrim,this is one of the few real unspoilt parts of Ireland....................................

im from Kilkenny and i know there is a place called Wallsough village just outside the city which has old tatched cottages to rent beside a lake, there is fishing facilties few minutes up the road but it is expensive for just one person alone you can check out there website www.wallsloughvillage.ie. hope this might be a bit useful

Go to www.discoverireland.ie, they have all self-catering homes all over Ireland. The best fishing would be the Mullet peninsula in Co, Mayo. You can get a bus from Dublin to Ballina and another bus will take you to the Mullet peninsula.

Hi...i know you said youve been to Clare but I thought id give you some more info on it just in case!

i have family who live in a town there called Ballyvaughan....and its absolutely beautiful

There, i think your best bet is to stay in a thatched cottage and visit the little pubs and restaraunts by the sea - theres often live music.

Theres also lots of cool scenic things there too.

The burren (take a look at the Dolmens, theyre incredible!), the Ailwee caves, The cliffs of Moher.

Theres also a "birds of Prey" sanctuary near the Burren - worth a visit.

In Lisdoonvarna (Clare again!) theres a nice aquarium and if you want to do some shopping you can go to Ennis.

The people are SO friendly there and so proud of the County- the accents are crazy too lol.

i defo think you should go for a thatched cottage in Clare.....theyre self-catering....and much more memorable than a B&B or hotel!

If you want a really cheap holiday, Ireland certainly isnt your ideal destination.....but it is well worth it

On the other hand, in comparison to most places in Ireland (such as Dublin), the west is a lot cheaper.

You should consider Wicklow - i know thats really close to you, but they dont call it the "garden of ireland" for nothing!!

its really nice there also, and i recommend it.

To visit, there is the sugarloaf (wicklow mountains). Theres two actually - the great sugarloaf and the mini sugarloaf

the views are amazing....great for walking and theres lakes up there too

Also, in Wicklow, you could visit Powerscourt Gardens or Powerscourt Waterfall. These are in Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow and VERY worth a visit on a nice day

Glendalough....is a national Park in Wicklow - its huge and incredibly beautiful....theres a round tower, ancient graveyard, stone circle lots of lakes lol

There is a hotel up in Glendalough....but if you really want to save money, you could always stay in a hostel

Also, as far as i know, you can rent houses down there....its truly gorgeous....(try either Glendalough or Glendasen)
