Irish player Sean O’Brien receives the European player of the year award – Rugby Update
The Irish flanker, Sean O’Brien, who was named the Player of the Year by European Rugby Cup, received his award on May 25th from European Rugby Cup Chief Executive, Derek McGrath. The flanker is excited to achieve the very first award of this
nature by European Rugby Cup as he remained very impressive during the Heineken Cup.
O’Brien made his international rugby debut in 2009 against Fiji. He has represented his national side in nine games so far but has not scored any points yet. His international career has not been a real success story for him as he has seen many ups and downs
in a short span of time.
He was dropped from the Irish side during the 2010 Six Nations championship. However he has performed remarkably well during the current year for his club, Leinster. He scored four tries for his side and helped the club win five games in the pool matches.
European Rugby considered his efforts and provided him with the accolade.
O’Brien was delighted to collect the award and said it was historical moment for him. He also said that award was merely a start and the real success would be to win the cup. He added, “It’s great to be presented with an award like this, but it has more
to do with the team than it has to do with me. Hopefully, this is only the start rather than the end of our success in Europe, and of course, we’ve got another trophy to aim at this weekend.”
The Chief Executive of European Rugby, who gave O’Brien the award, praised the efforts of young man and said he was impressive on the field. He further said, “Sean was an inspirational character at the heart of the Leinster pack in their victorious Heineken
Cup season and proved himself to be a major force both as a ball carrier and defender.”
McGrath appreciated the flanker and wished him successful in the future.
