Irish women defeat India by 2-1 in third match of FIH Champions Challenge
The Irish women defeated India by 2-1 in the third match of the day at FIH Champions Challenge tournament which is being played at UCD in Dublin, the capital city of Ireland.
The Irish team got to a good start in the first half when they scored the first goal of the match in the 11th minute on a penalty-corner and the scorer was Nikki Symmons. The Irish team won five penalty-corners in the first
eleven minutes, but they could manage fifth one to converted into a goal. The first four were saved by the Indians. After having scored the initial goal, the Irish side also had two more penalty-corners in 28th and 29th minute before
the interval, but they could not make the full use of these two chances. The first half finished at 1-0 to Ireland.
The Irish team also maintained their control in the second half and dominated the Indian women in the entire match. They created a number of good chances in the first ten minutes of the second half, but remained unlucky on a couple of occasions when
they mis-fired a shot and the other was saved by the Indian goal-keeper. However, their efforts became fruitful in the 50th minute when Chloe Watkins scored the second goal of the match and doubled the lead.
Eleven minutes before the close of the play, the Indians succeeded in reducing the Irish lead when they scored their first goal in 59th minute. The scorer was Kaur Jasjeet Handa. No further goal was scored after that and the
match concluded at 2-1 to Ireland.
“I am obviously delighted with the result I think we got India on an off day but we needed to create the off day also. I was mostly impressed with the maturity I felt we controlled for long periods and we managed to hang in when they had some ascendency
overall this is a good start,” Muller, the coach of the Irish women hockey team, stated after the match with a lot of pleasure on his face.
It was an interesting match to witness the defeat of Indian women by the hands of Irish women.
