Irishmen Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy keen to win Omega Mission Hills World Cup of Golf
Europe will be back in action this week at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup of Golf after a laid back week which saw the US Team rise to the top at the ninth President’s Cup at Royal Melbourne. Featured at the scenic Missions Hills Golf Club equipped with,
arguably, one of the longest courses in the world, Irish duo of Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy, will undoubtedly be the hottest bets in the event. Both players proved to be formidable foes for the Molinari brothers in the last episode of the event and were
close to forging a Playoff in the final round, something the Molinari brothers were successfully able to ward off.
McIlroy might just have been a rookie at that time of his career, and had won the Quail Hollow at PGA, but this week he will be stepping on the Mission Hills, ranked as the world number three and one of the most successful player of the year.
“It’s been a great couple of years to get my first win in the States, and then back that up with my first major at Congressional. There has been very low lows and very high highs, and it's been great,” McIlroy said.
Meanwhile McDowell had a relatively mild year in 2011 and has not won a single event so far, despite of his strong finishes in number of events. For his country, though, he still remains the flag bearer in China this week and will hope to wrestle one of
the strongest fields in the event.
“Definitely, it's great experiences, and like we talk about, to put this win on the resumé would be extra special, as well. Winning individually is nice. But winning as a team is something extra special and you know, I'm sure myself and Rory would dearly
love to win this week.” said McDowell.
The Irish duo not only share the same nationalities, but both Irishmen are as close as brothers and have come a long way in their relationships, with McDowell in particular guiding the young gun the intricate secrets of international golf. McIlory recently
switched over to Horizon Sports Management, after he decided to bid farewell to Chubby Chandler’s International Sports Management, and rumours have it that McDowell played an important role in convincing McIlroy for the switch.
The event will kick off this week with some 28 countries qualifying for the event after whirlwind qualifying rounds all over the year. The event is scheduled from November 24-27.Some 18 nations automatically qualified for the event featuring two of the top
ranking players from the country. Host country will be part of the event without having to go through the qualifying process.
