I'm doing some genealogy research and come across a place called "Irlandet, Norway", but I can't seem to find a place with this name. Is this a town or county that doesn't exist anymore?

  1. There is no place in Norway that's called Irlandet. I bet what you're thinking of is Ireland.

  2. I'm not Norwegian so not an expert but spent a lot of time there (hubby was living there when we met).

Irlandet in Norwegian can mean "Ireland" (as in the country) if I am not mistaken.  So this could be the reason why you are having trouble getting references.  I double checked it in Google Translate http://translate.google.com/translate_t?... but knowing that this is not the best tool in the world I could be corrected by a native speaker!

Hopefully a native Norwegian can help a bit more with this, but if not then based on this - maybe you can focus some of the research here as well

EDIT - Hanson a name which I have seen for people in the UK (so Ireland would also be possible) and in the Netherlands (although spelt with a Z instead of a S), so it's not necessarily that she will be Norwegian.  Adding together the clue about Irlandet and the surname, I would still try to investigate the Ireland link
