Hey everyone

I wish to make a patchwork quilt and want to use photos instead of patterned fabric.

I was wondering if iron on transfers fade/wash off/flake off after a while?

Thanks x

  1. If its on a quilt that you use and wash regularly, then yes after a bit they will start to flake and fade.  Sometimes they just peel right off.  But if its more for decoration/sentimental value, then that sounds like an awesome idea.  There are some places where you can have pictures put onto fabrics in some big fabric stores, or in malls.  I don't think they're iron transfers, but I couldn't say what they are exactly.

  2. Avery  makes Ink Jet Transfer Paper  that works well for that. You'll just have to take care when washing that you use cold water and the gentle cycle.

  3. Definitely come off over time best way to put pictures on fabric would be to get them laser printed on the fabric most sewing stores or photography places in the mall (or elsewhere) can do this. I've even seen this service available thru catalogs on online sources. You can also do this yourself on your own computer. Be careful of the background fabric though because details that you want to keep may get lost. The first website listed below is mainly for reference but the second one will help you figure out whether you want to print your own fabric pictures to place on a quilt. Hope this helps you out.

  4. Depending on the transfer paper will determine how long till it flakes, but it will.  The material also matters.  I would not recommend it for a quilt.

I suggest printing the pics on fabric using Bubble Jet Set. First soak and then dry the fabric with the bubble jet set. You iron freezer paper onto the fabric to make it stiff enough to print.  The bubble jet set will make the ink dye the fabric.

You will need to use a lighter colored fabric with this, but for best results you would have to also with the transfer paper.  Printing it will not make the fabric stiff, and it is permanent.
