  1. Soaker hose is a good answer but an expensive one.  Back before soaker hoses us old farmers would save tin cans.  We would take an ice pick or small steel punch and poke a small hole in the bottom of the can.  We would place this next to the plants and fill them with water.  Later when plastic 5 gallon containers came along we would use them.  They were larger and didn't have to be filled as often.

  2. A weep hose, or drip hose is a popular, inexpensive way to do it.  Use regular hose to get out to the garden, and then lay the weep hose throughout the garden, running along the rows, fairly close to the stems

  3. I personally am a believer in  the recycled rubber soaker hoses OR

make deep trenches about 4" deep near the base of the plant and do it how the big guys /farmers do it with irrigation block both ends of the trench to keep the fill from running out along the row.  I have found that getting a good long drink to the roots is greatly appreciated by the veggies.   Do it just before the sun come up and the wind begins to blow to to avoid evaporation.Set your water system on a timer to start at a certain time and to stop at a certain time.

Then you will be on your way to saving planet earth preciouse water.

You might want to read this article to show you why the soaker hose and how to get started.

  4. establish soaking hoses along side of the veg table rows. The best time to water is early in the morning. Using the slow drip method of the soaking hose allows the water to be absorbed more slowly into the soil.

  5. As only a spectator of gardening i can only tell you what my dad does. He gets little pipes that run along the garden, puts holes in them, connects them all together so that when he turns on the tap the pipes running along the veggie lines are watered. He then turns them off an hour or so later! Easy peasy!

    Happy Growing
