  1. unless you pass through immigration you do not need any visa.

if you are just connecting with another flight then you will most likley just go to the next gate where your plane leaves for flight. you will not pass through immigration for that

The Only country I have ever been through that reqired a transit visa just for the stop over was belarus. I was met with automatic weapon carrying immgration pointing their weapons at me while my visa and passport was checked, you wont have to worry about that I am sure

  2. Persons who transit through the United States en route to a foreign destination # must have a visa.  # The visa symbol is "C".

To apply for a transit visa, you must demonstrate:

Intention to pass in immediate and continuous transit through the United States.

Possession of a common carrier ticket or other evidence of transportation arrangements to your destination

Sufficient funds to carry out the purpose of the transit journey

    # Permission to enter another country upon departure from the United States #

C1 visas are issued to aliens proceeding in immediate and continuous transit through the U.S. Transiting aliens have to demonstrate that the principal purpose of the trip is to transit the U.S. While the law does not require transiting aliens to demonstrate a residency abroad which they do not intend to abandon, this category is in many ways similar to that of a B1/B2 temporary visitor. Where the alien qualifies for both, the latter is usually accorded.

Russian citizens need C1 transit visas even when transiting the United States on a single flight which stops at a U.S. port-of-entry before proceeding to a non-U.S. destination. For more details please visit www.uscis.gov
