Question:

Is 1/2" slate on a 9' table adequate?

I am looking at a used Connelly table, and don't want to get caught with the one critical detail less than it should be. I have usually seen 1" slate advertised on 8' tables. Is the larger 9' size just too heavy for upstairs in a home if it was 1" slate?

  1. Do not use a 1/2" slate.  You will have problems for sure!

If you can get 1" I'd definitely recommend it.  The weight would not be a problem.  They are all heavy anyway.  And stay away from 1 piece slates.

  2. 1/2 inch slate is kind of pushing it, special with a 9' table. There is 3/4 slate available. The 1/2 slate will have to much flex in it. Are you sure the floor can't handle the weight?  I have installed many many 9' tables in antique houses with floors that were all bowed....its tricky to level, but they all seemed to hold up fine.

  3. I would go with 3/4" slate minimum on a table that size. The table shouldn't be too heavy. It should weigh around 1000lbs but distributed over 4 legs so only 250lbs in any one spot. The floor will likely settle and it will need to be re-leveled after a short time.

  4. Get 1" slate. The weight will not be an issue at all, unless you're putting it in a tree house your kids built.
