  1. Yes. Any size is good if you are with friends having fun doing something you like.

  2. too be honest, if you in a place regularly getting 1.5 metre waves, your a lucky guy!

the thng to remember is that it is not always about size!  you may have a wave that is 8 ft high but if they are coming in at intervals of 5 seconds then you will have no hope of ever paddling out an catching a wave!

if your 1.5 metres are coming in at intervals of anything over 10 second intervals, then that is very good!

you must also bear in mind how the wave is generated. IF the swell is entirely wind generated then it is likely it will be messy and underpowered. What you want is groundswell, this where the waves are generated by geological features and these waves tend to be really clean (the come in in long 'lines' hence the expression 'lines of swell' etc

to sum up, if your one and a half metre waves are coming in at nice long intervals and if the the swell isnt to choppy and windy blown then you have some very good waves on your hands. if its a nic day, then thats a bonus!

some of the most enjoyable sessions i have ever had were in surf that was about 4 foot but coming in at really long intervals and it was beautifully clean, the rides lasted for a long time!

good luck have a good surf
