My friend is selling his used funboard. Should I buy a new one, ask for a lower price, or spend the $100?

  1. lower price

  2. The more proper question is always is it the right board for you?  If the answer is no then it doesn't matter how much it costs.  If its big and water tight it might be a great deal for you to learn on.  That way when you jack it up you don't have to feel bad about messing up a new board.  I would avoid it if the stringer is cracked, if has large open dings or feels unusually heavy.  Small dings can be fixed and I wouldn't worry about brown spots if it doesn't feel heavy.  Even a little delam is no big deal if its something your just learning on.

Ultimately though you get what you pay for (although sometimes in surfing you can spend a lot for a board that still ends up sucking).

  3. depends how beat up it is

  4. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

  5. Anything that you can buy for $100.00 is junk! Now, if that's all you have, go for it, but believe me, a decent used board will cost more than that. Unless, of course, the guy selling it is broke and really needs $$$ badly.

A decent used board can be had for around $250.00 to $450.00, depending on the type etc.. I am sure that the board you are looking at for $100.00 is a sleazy popout, that may already be de-laminating, or taking in water.

Go to a good local surf shop, and talk to the folks there. They can probably find you something decent, but I don't know about that $100. price tag. I have been surfing since '66, and I have owned dozens of boards (custom made, new off the shelf and used) and I haven't bought one $100.00 since '68 or so. Does that give you an idea?

  6. Yes, it is a good deal if the board has no brown spots (cracks where sea water has seeped in).

  7. well if your short on money and you really want a board go for it, but i would ask him as a friend just to lower it to 75( because as john f stated it is probably a cheap pop-out)

if the damage looks like its big enough that water could get in don't bother just go to a surf shop!
