  1. The one thing that has not mentioned so far is that although it is technically possible to run 1080p over VGA/component (source/display hardware permitting), content protection licenses limit devices from sending 1080p analogue signals.  HDCP handshaking will only work over a suitable digital (DVI/HDMI) cable with devices that have suitably configured HDMI/DVI ports.

The long and the short of it is that for most of your typical consumer a/v products HDMI is the only way you will get a 1080p signal between devices.

  2. The first two answers are wrong so you can ignore them.

HDMI will work for a 1080p connection however so will component and VGA. The catch with component is that most TVs component output jacks do not use 1080p. But that being said there is no difference in the quality of the picture by changing your cable.

The advantage of HDMI is that it carries both HD Audio and HD Video. So unless you are planning on running and HDMI cable to from your cable box into your Surround Sound receiver it is pretty much a waste of money because the cable is more expensive. It is also important to note that the Audio quality is less than an optical cable. The Ideal set up is VGA for video and Optical for sound. With VGA you also get the added bonus of being able to set the dimensions of your box. This will let you tweak the picture more when working with things such as an Xbox or PiP.

So yes an HDMI cable will carry 1080p signal but there are cheaper alternatives that will give you as good or better results.

If you must use HDMI please don't spend a ridiculous amount on something like Monster cables. They are no different from any others. The shielding they claim makes them different has absolutely no effect on picture quality what so ever. It does increase durability but the cheapest cable will last you at least 10 years unless you are constantly unplugging it and plugging it back in and for the money you could by more than 10 cheap cables for what you can buy one monster for. I would also like to point out that most stores mark up cabels almost 80% so its much cheaper to get them online.

    Hope this helps.

  3. HDMI is actually the preferred format for transmitting 1080p signals.Component Cables will only transmit in 720p/1080i.
