My little sister is 13 and wants to start contemporary dance classes. She has no prior dance training and I think she is a little old to just be starting. Is 13 too old or is it ok??

  1. Definitely not too old!  There are some people who start earlier and don't have the talent or the drive to take it anywhere.  When you start is not as important as you talent and your love of doing it.  I think if she wants to do it, you should support her in that. Even if she never gets famous or anything, she'll be doing something fun that will be great exersize.  Good for her!

  2. You're never too old! If she doesn't do it now because she thinks she's too old, then she'll miss out on something that she could have really loved. I did contemporary dance for 10 years, and I loved it.

    Go for it!

  3. To have a desire to learn anything is to be respected and nurtured.  In other words she should go for it...FYI she'll probably start...see how difficult it is to become a "dancer" and I am assuming a "professional" dancer...the dedication it requires, etc. than being a teen and being FICKLE her interest will change to something else.  Yes allow her to pursue it and even encourage her to do so...but also temper the enthusiasm with the thoughts/notions about how difficult it is to make a living through dance/entertainment.  PEACE!

  5. 13 is the right time to start, if not later.  Her body would be very flexible and adaptive to learn dancing.

  6. i have heard some people starting at 17 and 18 so i think that is definitly not too old. That is a good age. I started when i was 10 and i thought i was too old, but not really. I have accomplished a lot since that time and soon i will be on a competition team =]

  7. I'm 16 and my sister is 18. We began attending a street jazz dance class last month. We had never danced in our live before.

    13 is perfectly fine.

  8. It's never too old. If she wants to then who cares.

  13. im 14 and dance, but i have been dancing since i was like 4. she might have to take like private lessons or something to catch up so she knows what the steps and stuff are. but sure

  14. No. 13 is ok.

  15. it's better to start earlier... no doubt...

But the will to learn and do and teach... can overcome it.

  16. no WEIDMAN started at 18 yrs old and she became one of the greatest pioneers in modern dance. there many more too.

  17. You are never too old to begin any kind of training!  I've known many professionals in the performing arts that started around that age.  I actually think that is a good time to take up a skill.  It seems like too many parents force their toddlers into lessons and training for soccer, dance, music, etc..  13 is a great age to begin training!  Encourage her to pursue her passion.

  18. to me it doesn't matter what age you are you can start dancing as long as you love it and have fun with it.

  19. Maybe 13 is a time to plan out your life. Danceing is an amazeing sport and if thats want to do do it. Live your life.

  20. sounds fine to me
