I am looking for a car and found a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse. It's cute and sporty, but it has 145,000 miles on it. I really have no idea how many miles is too much, so, is that too much? On average, how many miles are on a car until it breaks down?

  1. take a test drive to the mechanic and they will tell you what the condition of the car and engine are in

  2. I wouldn't be too excited about purchasing a car with that many miles on it, but can tell you that if you take great care of a car, you can get 250k+ nowadays.  I have a 1995 Toyota Camry that currently has 248k (knock on wood).  It's been great not having a car payment and low insurance rates (finished paying it off in 2000).  Why not look at carmax.com?  It's a great site with no haggle pricing.  I plan on buying my next car from them.

  3. That is a lot of miles.  That means that vehicle was driven an average of 18,125 miles per year.  The high end a vehicle should be driven is only 15,000 miles per year.

If you did buy it check Kelly's Blue Book and don't give more then trade in value for it.  In fact I would give about 5 to 10% under that price if there is any cosmetic damage.  Also get a Car Fax report on it.

    Good Luck.

  4. Ya if you were  buying it that sounds like a big mistake on your part. And on avrage the amount of miles you can put on a car is about 200,000 miles before it starts breaking down. And becides 145,000 miles is like 6 trips around the world that would be like driving the car around the world 6 times!

  5. My 1994 Ford Mustang has almost 145000 miles on it. So yea, I'd say it probably has a few too many miles. But if it's been driven nicely (not rental or a teens first car) then it might be ok.
