The golf has been regularly maintained by a single owner. She took very good care of the car. I know her and I know she wouldn't try to scam me. My question is, will it need to be replaced in another year? I plan to have regular maintenance done on the car.....

  1. Hi,

I had Golfs before and they are built to last but 150k is a lot of miles and falls into high mileage category.

Diesels tend to last longer than petrol and if its mainly motorway miles then thats also in your favour.

Again if the car has been serviced and well maintained (all consumable parts regularly replaced) and kept clean and the body is in good condition then the chances are good it will be ok. Another important thing is to have an extended test driver, take it on various roads (& motorways) to try it at various speeds. If all sounds ok then good.

However, as with everything the more you use it the more the chance of things wearing out. It would be unreasonable to say not to expect engine & gearbox & drivetrain wear. Thats not to say its about to fail but to accept the chance something may fail and future service bills may be higher (or more frequent) than a newer car.

On a lighter note I think the VW 'test' golf did something like 250k miles before a major failure.

    Good luck,

    Mark.

  2. Modern foreign cars are good for 250,000 to 300,000 miles or more if properly maintained. However, book price decreases when a car excedes  a given number of miles per year (usually 12,000 per year). Check NADA or Blue Book at the library.

  3. Unless you have plans for repairs 150,000 is a lot on miles on a car>

  4. 150k is a lot but some cars can last to almost 300k with good maintenance and you said they took good care of it. go for it
