Hi, I'm considering renting a loft near downtown Toronto for $1500 a month (includes utilities, parking) from Aug to Dec, just to live somewhere more lively and enjoyable for a while.

I'm battling social anxiety/shyness, want to live it up for a bit and take some chances before I get too old (i'm 28 right now).

Right now I live with my parents, and we shared expenses with my total coming to $1200 per month (includes food)...they are great easygoing parents, I enjoy their company, help around the house, but living there in the burbs with them is doing nothing for my shyness, so that are all for me moving out...and can handle the extra cost without me there.

I earn about 70k before taxes, have 120k in savings/investments, and no debts.

What do you think? $1500 for rent only? Is it okay from a financial point of view.

  1. If I had and made the money to do it then I would.  Go for it and enjoy life a little.

  2. I do not know what the going rate for rent in Toronto is but that seems like an ok rate since it includes utiities and parking.

BTW: Congrats on the courage to move out!

  3. 1500 is good compared to where I live most rent around my area will cost you 2000 or more

  4. i personally  wouldnt pay  that  when  you  can buy a home  and pay less than  that  but  i  guess  depends on  the location  and  size  of  the place  you  want  to rent

  5. No. For 6 months that's $9000. That's too much for livening up your life. Take a trip. Get involved in activities. use your money more wisely. I mean technically you can affrord it, but you would be better off buying a condo at least. But still, try to expand your life in ways that are more beneficial. Go to church, take a class, join a group that interests you (arts, drama, etc.), coach Little League, etc. Find a niche that you will enjoy and not cost you that much money. We are experiencing financial problems in the U.S. and because we now have a global economy that will affect most other countries also. Be wise.

  6. 1500 is a little steep to pay for rent, why not just buy?  i believe you would be better off just buying, but hey, that decision is totally up to you.

  7. Think of it this way; the money you are going to pay monthly goes directly into the fat pocket of "SOMEONE". This 'entitity' certainly isnt going to be doing something for the property every month that 'upgrades' the home or makes the home prettier for your happiness in living there. Unless there is a major problem that requires repair for the property value $1500 is basically pocket change for a 'landlord' Buy your own home, even if it is a piece of ****-fix it up yourself. Then become the 'landlord'. Until them ........LYNCH ALL LANDLORDS!

  8. I'm not a financial adviser but i feel you can and should do it.

Your goals are to battle your anxiety and become a more"sociable"person. It is a spending that is worth it.

    Best luck !

    :)

  9. That's way too much.  Get a roommmate.  and move elsewhere.

  10. 1500 is not bad including utilities!!... if u are comfortable with the rent then it shouldnt be a problem.. gd luck man

  11. Why not just buy a condo?

  12. h**l no. sounds liek you guys are kinda rich though, but for just rent 1500 dollars is alot. now if u mean food and everything then i dunno. because my family only pays like 600 bucks a month, but we get alot of food since thers like 7 of us. and we have electric and stuff

  13. You can afford this. If it makes you a happier and a more well rounded person, go for it. Keep an eye on your other expenses though.

  14. for a 500,000 mansion

  15. from mine i think thats tooooo much

my parents pay 600$ and its a two story house (not including basement, attic, and theres a garage) and its 4 bedroom 2 bath a living room kitchen dining room and it has a sun porch

  16. $1500 is not to bad for rent. With utilities that is a good rate.

  17. It is pricey, but if you have the monbey, go for it :-)

  18. its afine price if the loft is really nice

  19. Wow, so many things to say:

A: Move out. You're 28 and way too old to be living with parents.

B: I think $1500 is a crazy amount to spend on rent. If you're living by yourself, try to find something under $1000. Spending $1500 is for a couple, or several roommates.

C: Take the money you save on appt, and get medicinal (or non-medicinal) drugs. ;) Alchol helps with social shyness, but use it in moderation.

D: Burbs are for people under 20 and over 40. Get out as fast as you can!

E: Nice living; I hope after I pay off my student loans and find a steady job to earn .. IDK how much I'll earn. I have to look into that.
