Is 1600:1 a good contrast ratio for a 42" HDTV?

  1. That is not a good number.  For static contrast ratio, you should be able to get 5000:1 or more.


  2. Contrast Ratio is more relevant if there's a lot of ambient light in the room you watch the TV in.  If you turn off the lights and there are no windows, you probably don't need more than what you are asking about.  That's better than in a movie theater (of course, the theater doesn't have much light or windows).
