Question:

Is 17 credits too much for one term in college?

Hey guys,

I will be starting college as a freshman this year at University of Oregon.

I am scheduled to take 17 credits worth of classes:

Russian Language (5 credits)

Micro-Economics (4 credits)

Writing 121 (4 credits)

Business 101 (4 credits)

Do you think this is too much for one term? UO is on a three term school system (fall, winter, spring).

Any suggestions?

  1. do you think you can handle it? i know some kids who are taking 19, but it's a lot of hard work. i don't know anything about you so i can't really say, but yeah, 17 is usually considered quite a bit.

  2. nope, in fact, you might get into the Department of (whatever your interest in; like Engineering) earlier

but it really depends on the UO policy of MAX credit per term

  3. Judging from the number of credits for each class, you'll definitely be doing a lot of studying and reading. There's many people who take that many credits because they can handle the load. Think about how you work and study, if you're the kind of person who doesn't procrastinate and a hard worker, then you'll be able to do it. You just need to dedicate yourself to it. My school goes on a semester system and there's many people who have taken 24 units. It's crazy but they can handle it. I did 18 credits my last semester and I did alright. It wasn't too bad but it was time consuming.

Since you are a freshman, maybe you should take less units because you just started. You don't know how big or small the course work will be so don't pile everything on your plate. A lot of people take a normal/good amount of units and if they feel they handled that semester very well, they add more units to their next semester. Remember that you have 4 years, don't worry about having to finish everything so soon.

Or...you could always attend these classes for the first week or so and judge how the course work is going to be like. You'll be able to get a sense of what your schedule is going to be by looking at the syllabus. You could even talk to the professors to get a sense whether or not you can handle all the work. Hope this helped. =)

  4. no that is ok..  if u were taking more difficult courses i'd say yes

    u will do fine

    i have faith in u

  5. It depends.

At my school, most of our classes are 3 credits and full-time tuition covers 12-18 credits.

Some students do better when taking a light course load and opt for 12 credits. Some students thrive under pressure and regularly take 18. Others take somewhere in between.

Just keep in mind that college is an adjustment. If you have a difficult time with change, it may be a rather big adjustment. What may be a reasonable schedule later down the road may be a nightmare your first semester. You know you best, follow your gut.

    Good luck next year! :]

  6. Yay i'm taking 17 credits too. I would just suggest really good time management. Also don't forget to take the time to unwind and relax when you need it or else you will urn yourself out. Good Luck.

  7. Go for it, I am taking 18.  Just make sure you get a planner.

  8. Yes.  But some do take 17.  Max should be around 15 or 16.

  9. No, but it also depends on how studious you are. I took 18.5 credits freshman year and I was fine, but other have a harder time adjusting.

I've never seen a school that gave 4 and 5 credits per class. All of my classes have been 3 credits.

  10. I would say start with 14 to 15. This is your first time in college. You want to get a feel for campus life and experience. You have to learn your own schedules, set your own rules.

So pushing 17 is neat for bragging, and if your very very intelligent, but if your like a high B student to middle A student, then I would say learn the ropes first. You can try the 17 hours next term or even summer when not as hectic.

    Good luck

  11. You mean hours, right?  17 hours in a semester is not a big deal.  Many students have taken 18, 20 or even more hours in a semester.   You can certainly do it; not sure why you'd want to tackle Russian in your first semester, tho.  That, in itself, should take some time.
