  1. 18# is a bit on the heavy side for even a large bones cat and especially a female.  With this said tho, there ARE those big girls out there.  If you can take your hands and run them along the side of her body and you cannot feel any of her bones, then she's probably a bit too fat, if you can feel them with just a normal petting pressure, then she's fine.  Also check to see if her belly is really round and low when she walks.  If she is too heavy and if you seriously have questions about this, taking her to vet will give you the answer quickly.  otherwise, cut back a bit on her food and/or help her get a bit more exercise and all will be fine.  Just keep in mind that letting any animal (even us!) live with too much extra weight, shortens their lives.

  2. My gray female tabby is about that much. I believe closer to 19lbs. She is very healthy according to our vet. She gained about 10lbs though after being spayed. Very lazy though. I know she could stand to lose a few pounds.

  3. Depends on the muscle and size of your cat?

Look at its stomach, does it seems to be a big ball under all that fur or is the cat straight as a board?

If it is in the middle, its healthy, to one end or the other, lessen or add more to their diet.

  4. yes. should be around 8-9lbs. Mine is close to 9lbs and is 2 yrs 4mo. old and calico dsh. The vet saw her and said she was at a decent weight for her age.

  5. my 3 year old cat is just under 18 pounds and the vet said he's wayyyy too fat.  not overly obese- yet- but too heavy and needs to lose weight.

  6. unless it is a pure bred maine coon or norwegian forest cat, then yes, it is.  Average size for an average cat is 9-10 lbs.

How can you tell if your kitty is overweight?  can you feel his ribs?  if not, even when looking for them, then your cat is obese.  If you can feel them but have to go looking for them, then he is overweight.  if you can feel them slightly, your cat is of normal weight.

To put your cat on a diet to help it out, check out http://www.catinfo.org a website run by a vet who studies feline nutrition.  Lots of great info and resources on there.  Please do not feed your cat 'lite' or "diet' food..  it is too low in nutrients to satisfy your kitty, and she'll just end up begging for food all the time.

  7. I pretty much think you! You should put her on a diet. My 2 year old calico weighs 9 lls.

  8. depends, some cats are large framed.

    a vet will know.

  9. Most likely too fat yes, but like people it's more about the body shape than it is about the number.  If you can feel its ribs under a thin layer of fat/muscle, your cat is likely of a healthy weight.  if you can't EASILY feel these ribs, chances are your cat is overweight.  Also if its belly hangs down, again, chances are it's overweight.

  10. LOL! Nah, maybe a little over weight. My cat is almost that much. She's a hog! No its not too bad.
