I'm an Asian gal who'll backpack to Paris in June, but I need to know which part of Paris I should avoid to stay? And which place is the safest place to stay if I need a dorm bed in a hostel?? Thanks for helping.

  1. The 18é is a beautiful place! I lived there for 5 months, just home since January! It was me(male) and 2 girls, both early 20's- and i must say none of us ever had any trouble! Its one of the most charming places to live, with its cobbled streets lined with artists, quite cafes etc. and the view from the Sacre Coeur is amazing! My metro stop was Jules Joffrin and there was a hostel just a minutes walk from it( cant remember the name of it though, sorry but looked nice)! I wouldnt worry about staying there at all! If you want somewhere more central in the city theres one called "young and happy" in the 5é-its cheap and in a great location( not to mention the greatest bar in the world 4/5 doors up from it)! As for avoiding an area of the city...i guess just stay out of the suburbs...i've been to the banlieu and their not the most pleasant of places, other than that the city is everything you imagine it to be, a real treat of a city! Enjoy!

  2. Reputable hostels in this area can be found here as well as cheap hotels e.g. :

    Montmatre:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Franc...

It's one of the lesser red light districts and tends to be more "arty" focused with tourists and artists mixing in the day time up on the hill. Nice area.

Same common sense advice that I've previously given applies here as well as the other good replies received here.

Good luck .... maybe you should call the National Tourism Office in your country or send them an email ....it sounds like you need some help:

  3. Montmartre is very touristy and is also the red light district, it is fairly safe, but I guess I would stick to the main, populated streets if I were travelling by myself as it does attract some bad elements.

As for a hostel, the one near where I live seems to be pretty popular and good, but it is just outside Paris, not too far from Montmarte

    Amuses toi bien

  4. Pigalle, which is a neighborhood in the 18ème, is the red light district, but that doesn't apply to the entire arrondissement. If you were to find a hotel or hostel near, say, the Lamarck-Caulaincourt, Anvers, or Jules Joffrin métro stations, my guess is you'd enjoy the proximity to the Sacré-Cœur, without being in a seedy area. It's not dangerous. I used to live on rue Labat (near Marcadet-Poissonniers métro) and although it certainly wasn't a glamorous neighborhood, it was neither dangerous nor a red light district. If you Google Paris youth hostels, you get lots of info: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Par... Have a great trip!

  5. paris is not so dangerous if you want to go to montmartre you can also le quartier latin is not so expensive

  6. Montmartre is perfectly safe. There is very little violent crime anywhere in Paris.

There is some street prostitution in Paris but remember that prostitution is legal in France (although solicitation is not). The mere fact of the presence of prostitutes should therefore not be alarming.

Violent Crime is primarily found in the banlieus (suburbs) in which the government has built huge housing projects to warehouse the poor and especially the Berber, Arab and African poor. No tourist would ever venture into these areas anyway.
