Question:

Is 2 years enough experience to get an agent?

I'm 13 years old but have had very little experience and I'm hoping to get an agent in a few years. In September I'm hoping to get involved in everything I can from singing competitions, talent shows, school plays etc. I already take professional training in singing and piano and I am also told I have a distinct voice. (if that helps) The thing is I can't get acting or dancing lessons because my parents can't afford it but I would take acting lessons over dancing lessons if I had the chance because I simply don't think dancing is "my thing" but I am hoping to improve dancing and acting through my drama club and maybe a dance group. I am also athletic (fast runner, if that helps lol) The thing is if I do all of these things for 2 years or so (ill be 15) do you think I even have a chance? I've already joined an extras agency but I don't know if that will help. I also think I have a unique look and I've been told I am very pretty but some people if that helps in any way. Advice? Thoughts?

  1. I have a minor knowledge of this area and you need to work with  your parents as you are not old enough to get an agent on your own. My advice is to google "agents for child actors" and google Paul Petersen who is a former child actor that works with young people and their parents to make sure they are given good advice in this area. He's a good man.

  2. I'm not quite sure what you want to get into - movies? Broadway? If it's Broadway, then you should definitely get dancing lessons. Getting experienced in all fields is the best way to go, especially since musical theater is considered the "triple threat".

I also have to question the fact that you say your parents can't afford dancing or acting lessons. I don't know the price of agents, but I'd imagine that hiring one would be much more expensive than taking classes, especially since agents can't always get you a job. Taking lessons guarantees results.

Joining an Extras Agency was probably a good first step, but I don't know how much it will really further your career. Anyone from the street can walk by the main character of a movie without any skill.

It's also important to consider the fact that you're just thirteen. That could be a little young to be starting to get into professional acting unless you have a Frank Sinatra talent.

I'd get advice from someone you trust to be unbiased, ie. not your parents or best friend. Good luck with your career!
