I live ina astudio for 700 w/ all utilities included. I looked at a place for 800 with steam eat and electric not included. I can't get it off my mind as I would love to rent it. The gas would average about 75 a month and electric 30, I might go back to schol and cut back on work and am weighing my options. I do have savings and really desire a change at the same time too.

  1. If you rent the new place, do not cut back on the job hours.

  2. When it comes to renting residential real estate, the question of a rental rate being "worth it" is often a matter of personal choice. Proximity to a work place of place of education may make real estate inherently more valuable to one individual than another. Another consideration is that a rental that does not have utilities included can fluctuate seasonal, with significant upswings in costs during the winter months.

As a general rule, one should not spend more than 40% of monthly income on housing - this goes for both renting and owning. However, as a smart economic decision, its better to stay closer to 30%. It sounds like you are an intelligent person and have managed to accumulate savings, so if you are considering going back to school to further our career, you should consider how long you would be there, what income you could expect while in school, and what the potential upside is upon completion of school. All of these factors will play into whether the increase in rent is too much.

  4. You want "change?" That's it? You want to cut your work hours, start paying for school again, and increase your monthly expenses at least $200 and more likely $300 just to have "change?" LOL
