  1. Depends on the car we are talking about but I would say it could be considered average for a car, good for a truck/SUV.

    But back in the early to mid 90's, they used to make cars in the 40 mpg area (my 94 Civic = 41 MPG).

    The mpg dropped in the last decade.

  5. Not bad at all.  You could do better, but there are definitnely diminishing returns.  Since we express fuel efficiency as a reciprocal (it's upside down) saving 5 mpg from 15 to 20 represents quite a bit of gas, but saving 5 mpg from 30 to 35 doesn't amount to much.

    If you commute 20 miles a day, I'd be happy.  If you commute 120 miles a day, I'd at least consider something..... tinier.
