Question:

Is 30w enough power for my speakers?

I recently purchased a Harmon/Kardon AVR-146 to power my Klipsch Quintet III speakers. These speakers can handle 50W RMS (75W for center). My reciever outputs just 30W RMS. Is this enough power?

The speakers have a 90.4dB sensitivity, and I have really good speaker wire. If you need more info, just let me know.

Thanks in advance!

  1. it is sufficient. if your receiver is more than 50W RMS then thats a problem.

  2. sgtpepper is right. Clipping will kill your speakers long before the amp dies.

If you keep it at a reasonable volume, you will be OK.

  3. First of all, congratulations on your purchase of a Harmon Kardon product, you've obviously got good taste in electronics.  Secondly, the answer to your query is,  no.  In order to properly "drive" your speakers you will need to increase your power outage.  However, if you were to listen to your system at less than peak performance levels, the 30 watts that you have presently will suffice just fine.

  4. Don't drive your speakers at very high volumes with your present amplifier as you might end up frying your tweeter.

(for details search on internet about "clipping")
