Question:

Is $350 per week a fair pay for a nanny working 5-8 hours per day?

We are hiring a nanny to watch our 2 year old and our 4 month old. The nanny will arrive by 8am and will be with the kids until 4pm, Monday-Friday. There will be days where I will be home earlier than 4pm. Maybe 2pm or maybe 3pm. And if that's the case than the nanny will be free to leave early. Her duties will include all the child care things. She does not have to do laundry, cooking, vacuuming, or other chores. She is not required to drive the kids anywhere far (no more than 3 miles round trip), and she will be compensated if she has to take them to the doctor or something like that. So, with that being said, is $350 per week a fair salary? She will not need to come during Thanksgiving, X-mass etc, but she'll still collect her $350/week. The plan is to increase to $375/week in 2009, assuming that she meets our expectations.

Please tell me what you think.

Thank you.

  1. i'll work for you.. hehe  :)

  2. i wish i lived closer to you..I'm babysitting my way through college and that would be a dream for me and my 2 girls....I'd be thrilled to get that much and i wouldn't care one bit to have dinner ready for you guys after working all day long, since you're that generous it would be the least i could do....and yes i would clean up the messes we made cuz kids love to learn and sometimes they do that by messing a little bit

lucky nanny!  I think you'd be a great boss!

  3. Good for an illegal as long as you also provide room & board.

The secret is to draft an illegal. Millions of upper-class/rich families employ this tactic.

Give her weekends off to visit her family.

  4. No way I wouldn't do it maybe $450-$500. In a daycare you would pay between $500AND $625 FOR TWO. You have this person travel to your home and care for two toddlers exclusively. Let her do light housework like toy cleaning, bottle cleaning, light cooking breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Also make sure she has a pay check with the appropriate taxes taken out.  $400 could possibly be a start.

  5. That sounds good to me. Can I come be your nanny? LOL

  6. I'm sorry, but $8.75 an hour is not enough. Are you pay her taxes? Remember two children is a lot. A two year old is a handful, a four month old needs a lot of attention. A full time nanny will usually get paid $10 an hour. Please reconsider, remember your leaving her with the most precious possessions you have. She going to do her best with your children. She worth every penny you spend.

  7. no that is less than $10 per hour

  8. no I think that's fine that's how much I pay for my daughter's daycare

  9. sorry but where i live thats VERY cheap.

around me people are paying between 12-20 an hour.

a toddler and infant, puhlease pay the woman more.at least at 400 a week, she has a lot of her own expenses!

  10. i think that sounds fair and since she only has the duties of tending to the children and no household chores i think it is fine. its very generous that you will still pay during holiday weeks that she doesnt have to work. and since you wanna increase after you try her out to say is great. good luck

  11. That is pretty low. Especially having a 4month old. Someone with good qualifications and experience is going to want more. At 8hrs a day that is a little more than 6/hr. At 5hrs a day that is 10/hr. By today's standards 10/hr is not very much.

  12. To me that sounds pretty fair giving that some days you will get out at 2 or 4 and they can also go places if they need to. For day care for one tho its about 135(give or take a little) where i live for one kid 3 days a week or around 800-1000 a month so you are giving about average and its really nice to have weekends off and paid weeks for holidays. Wish i could do it for you i love little kids!!! That's awesome!

  13. That is $8.75/hour.  It is on the low end as far as child-care rates.  I would recommend starting at $450 to attract a higher quality of worker.

  14. Maybe you can pay her 375-400 dollars.

Then by 2008 you can make it 420 to 445 dollars.

    It seems pretty fair.

  15. Yes, that is ok.

  16. 5-8 hours, assuming you'll pay $10 per hour ranges from $350-560, and assuming that she's not going to have the duties of the house, it seems reasonable.

  17. i would be at least 400 for 2 kids if you want a quiality sitter

  18. That is fair. I make $300 a week watching a thirteen month old and four month old in my home (never have to take them anywhere)...

  19. That sounds rather fair.  I am a nanny of two kids the same ages.  I have been with the family since the two-year-old was new.  I am there for eleven hours, three days a week.  A little less than your needs, but still close.  I do drive the children, but am compensated for longer trips. It helps break up my day too.  I make $250 a week...so your $350 is well above fair. I also have the same salary over holidays and get a week vacation in the summer.  It makes for a pleasant working enviornment.  I love the kids I am with.  Honestly, as if they were my own.

Edit: I would like to add that I am a high-quality worker.  I work for the salary I get because the working enviornment it good and relaxed. That makes a huge difference in job satisfaction.
