  1. At one point "Prudhoe" Bay was producing about 400,000 barrels of oil a day -- about 8% of the total production achieved in the U.S. at that time.

In March of 2006 BP oil engineers discovered a pipeline spill estimated at 267,000 gallons, making it one of the largest on-land spills in Alaska's history.  The result is that oil production at Prudhoe Bay has been significantly reduced.

Not many people in the oil business haven't heard about Prudhoe Bay in one fashion-or-another.  It is by no stretch of the imagination the "mother lode" of crude oil reserves though.  Estimates put the oil field at the 18th largest ever discovered.  Its location (due to geology and climate mostly) results in the Bay's per-barrel extraction costs higher than many other oild fields around the world.

  2. When we're you on the Sara?  I was there with squadron VF-103.

We have plenty of oil.  We just don't have the political will to get it.

Politicians want to drive up the price of gas to make alternative sources of energy look cheap.

[Edit] Made two Med cruises on her in the late 70's and early 80's.  Good times!

  3. It is political...

The Republicans want to use the energy sources available within America.

The Democrats don't want the energy sources tapped within America due to the damage to the environment.

  4. No.

Oil companies know all about it.  And it doesn't change anything.

US oil production peaked in the 1970s at less than 4 billion barrels/year.  We're now below 3.

You could drill all of Alaska and our coast now.  No oil man thinks we'll ever see nearly 4 again.  It's just not there.

We use 7.  We're not going to drill our way out of our total dependence on expensive imported oil, from countries we really shouldn't trust with our economic well being.

Don't worry about our leaving the oil in the ground.  When we get desperate, we'll drill everything.  And we will get desperate.

  5. Well maybe it's because it's in tar oil sands and will make the worlds biggest toxic site - as big as England....In the Independent newspaper UK on Monday front page, so we in the UK know what's being planned
