Is $5,000 too much for a first car?

i'm going into my last semester of college and im thinking about buying my first car a honda, but im not sure of a civic or accord....some people tell me that im spending too much money on a car and should buy something cheaper....is it too much?

no, but $5,000 on a car repair bill is. Make sure you get a mechanical b4 buying whatever you get.

Well for a Honda 5K would be gr8 depending on a specific year. I think you should get accord because it is very reliable, gr8 fro otehr passengers and it is roomy too.

5,000 is an ok price for a 1st car. stick to hondas or toyotas you can get a good reliable one for 5k

The first car is almost guaranteed to be in an accident (and even possibly totaled).  So it is good you are NOT spending too much.

Any much less, and you REALLY have to look hard (and long) to find something in decent mechanical shape - that won't brake down every week.

That does NOT mean there are NO cheaper cars in good condition.  It is just harder and harder to find GOOD cheap cars.

My 94 Civic has 187K miles and it is rock solid.  It still gets great MPG, and burns NO oil at all.  It really runs like NEW.  If I had to sell it, it would NOT get more than few grands.   So they are out there.

no, it's about right.

but you won't get a civic or accord with less than 150k miles for that.  That's a heck of a lot of miles to start out with.

Nope, if you can pull off $5000, go for it!  I spent $250 for my first car, and to keep it running, I spent at least $2000..It was a piece....but it was a cool piece!
