I know dogs have to be 8 weeks before they can leave mom, but is 5 months a good age to buy one? I know it's not grown yet, i've only ever had big dogs like Rotts and I would ONLY get them at 8- 10 weeks. Would u buy a yorkie @ 5 months?? I've never had one and dont know too much about little dogs but have been reading lots and researching. So the next step is getting one.

  1. Please don't make the mistake of thinking small dogs are easier than large dogs.  This is simply not true.  If you would ONLY get a rott at 8 weeks, then ONLY get a yorkie at 8 weeks.  Small dogs have a much greater tendency to be aggressive (often simply because their owners don't treat them like dogs) so you'll need to socialize him well.  And his training should be started early, before he develops bad habits that you won't be able to train out of his stubborn little head.

  2. It is actually better to leave a toy dog with its mother for awhile.  At around 3 months, it is crucial that they are around their littermates and mother--it teaches them bite inhibition and proper dog behaviour. Leaving a yorkie with its family for awhile will also ensure that it is eating well, so you won't have to deal with hypoglycemia (hopefully!!).  I would never get a toy dog before 3-4 months; 5 sounds just fine.  Just make sure you are buying from a RESPONSIBLE breeder that does genetic health testing, showing, and has a good health guarantee!

  3. the breeder will tell you. it's always different.

  4. I had a Yorkie for 13 wonderful years. I think my parents got her when she was about 3 or 4 months old from a breeder. She was a great pet and loved being around people. She would act like she was a pitt bull to strangers rather than a 9lb. little Yorkie. I've read books that say the longer a puppy is with her mother the better relationship they can have with their owner. I don't think I really believe that, but I'm sure it doesn't hurt! But to answer your question, I think 5 months is a perfectly fine age to get a dog. You just have to be careful because they're so tiny when they're babies. You have to make sure they're not under your feet! They do require grooming and brushing because their hair grows almost like a humans. We kept our dog's hair short because she never liked bows in her hair. You'll love having a little dog. You can take them everywhere! Good luck
