Is .50 cal. the largest cal. legal???

I was reading in a Cabelas catalog and there is a..

Cabelas Tradition Hawken Unfinished Kit. And you can buy it in .50 and .54 cal.

But i thought the largest you could have is .50?????

Well you're talking about black powder and yes, the .54 cal. black powder smoker is very popular.  The biggest hunting rifle commercially available (at one time) was the .700 Nitro Express.  The .577 T-Rex is also bigger than the .50 as is the .600 Nitro Express.

The .50 Barrett rifle (chambered for the .50 Caliber BMG bullet) is legal in some States but it is not a hunting rifle.  It is too heavy and unwieldy to lug out into the field.

You've obviously never heard of the 4 bore.  It's muzzle is a full 1.052 of an inch in diameter.  It can fire about 4 ounces of lead shot, compared to one ounce from a 12 gauge shotgun.  There are many very large guns out there for purchase, but some areas have passed ridiculous laws banning weapons .50 caliber or larger.  California is one of those regions.

Black powder guns aren't considered firearms by the BATFE, so firearms laws don't apply to them.

With modern ammunition, any rifle round over .50 caliber with a non-sporting (very important that last bit) use is considered a destructive device. However black powder weapons and shotguns are exempted from that restriction. As are certain extremely large bore firearms which the BATF has declared have a sporting purpose (mainly African elephant guns).

I remember seeing  black powder rifles in .58 caliber. As for high powered rifles... you usually don't see much bigger than a .50caliber rifle but there are some out there. Don't think I would want to shoot one though.

no theres even higher calibers than .54 for black powder guns
