I purchased a Home theatre system for my family room and it says 1000W total output and 500Watts RMS. My family room size is approx. 15.10 x 18 = 271 sq ft is this loud enough to fit this room?

  1. True home theater does not mean LOUD. We are talking about the ability to reproduce the slightest of sounds efficiently. This is called DYNAMIC RANGE. This is easily explained as being able to hear the little guy on the triangle behind the entire orchestra.

For any given piece of music - and we will say speakers of 250 watts RMS (average or normal power that the speakers will reproduce) a home unit of only 50 watts...we would have to turn the volume up a great deal to hear all the sounds but would probably run into distortion - 100 watts half as loud to hear all the sounds at the same volume but we have the ability to increase volume without distortion.

At 500 watts, our volume level is low and we still hear all the music. This is because the output of the amp at 500 watts has a lot dynamic range for the music to "breathe" shall we say.

  2. Depends what kind of receiver it is....but I would assume that you are getting 100w RMS x5speakers giving you 500w RMS with a max output of 1000w.

I would say it's loud enough.

  3. EXCELLENT QUESTION!

Its not a matter of "loudness" its a matter of clarity AND punch when the action gets busy in a movie.  You will rarely ever hear every one of those 500 watts in action.

The best amp holds power in reserve (in large capacitors) for when a dense signal come at it (like a big action sequence) and standard amps (like those found in most all-in-one home theater systems) rely strictly on wattage.

THE ANSWER IS MOST LIKELY:  YES, with these kind of wattage numbers you have enough power to hear things as loudly as you would ever want to.

    Now go and ENJOY IT!

  4. I am sure it will be loud enough.

That is a good sized room I would say the system is probably on the small side though.

It really depends on what you feel is loud enough or how much you like the sound quality.

Try it out. if you don't like it then take it back and get a better one.

  5. With out knowing the data regarding all channels driven and at what frequency spectrum. that number is quite easy to fudge.

You must have purchased a Panasonic or Sony HTIB.

  6. ya if you want to blow your ears out!
