My wife thinks it is. I think it gives them a jump. It's not like they are going full contact from the get.

  1. yes personally they should learn traditional first

  2. no 6 is a good age to start. we take them as young as 3 but the only thing is you need to find a school that has a childrens class like the little dragons program that we do. It offers fundamentals like basic stances, punches and kicks. the little dragons cater to the begginer child and and keeps everything fun so it keeps thier attention better than just a regular class with young adults and grown ups. I know little dragons is offered by alot of Tae Kwon Do and Kempo schools but I dont know if other martial arts will have it. From experiance children that young will get board or be intimadated by older people in calss most of the time. so its good to keep them seperate if at all possible

  3. I don't think so. My mom actually got me started with martial arts when I was 6 years old. Through my training, it has given me more confidence, and got me out of my comfort zone. And I made lots of friends. I think that your kids would enjoy martial arts. I would take them to a kung fu kids class or karate or jiujitsu. As the old saying goes- it builds character. Rent The Karate kid and watch it with your wife and kids. She is just worried, but with a little more understanding, she'll come around. As I progressed I am studying a form of mix martial arts which are brazilian jiujitsu and muay thai kickboxing. I am really into MMA. Martial arts does require however dedication, of course money, patience, and discipline.

  4. my coach just started his son in wrestling at teh ripe age of  5, so i dont see how mma at 6 can be bad, i think ur gona waste alot of money, but h**l if u can afford it why not

  5. No, six is not too young.  However it is hard to keep children at that age focused.

If the child takes to martial arts well, it can bring worlds of good.

Many martial arts school have a minimum age of 4-6.  The two schools I study at both have a minimum of 5.  However, one instructor has his 3 year old arm-barring people already.

  6. My son began training at six.  It's almost a perfect age believe it or not.  My son was well grounded and not easily distracted for his age though.  It all depends on the kid's maturity level and interest in what he or she is doing.  My son took to it like he was a natural and his sensei was very impressed by his attitude and performance in the dojo.  If a kid is not interested at all you'll be able to tell pretty quickly, as their parent, whether they're with it or not.  I'd say six is a d**n good age to begin any martial art.

    Good luck

  7. 6 is perfect. I started Judo/Jiu Jitsu/Sambo at 8, but Ive seen a lot of kids start as early as 4. They usually dont pay too much attention, but the exercise is good for them and whatever they pick up is a plus. By the time he is 8 or 9, he would start picking things up and improving. Just dont give up on it if he isnt focused.

  8. I would recommend a solid traditional style of martial arts before throwing him into mma.  Give them a good disciplined fighting style for a solid basis.  I wouldn't recommend a soft style or Okinawan Karate.  But a good Kempo, jiu jitsu, judo or shotokan dojo will likely be more beneficial.

I am a believer in all martial arts but there is one thing I can tell you is that it's not what you know, or how much you know, but how well you know what you know.  Quality over quantity.  MMA is alot of stuff to learn and the best fighters in the world have solid backgrounds in a particular style like chuck liddel and kempo, Machida and Shotokan, Uriah Faber and wrestling.  Nog and jiu jitsu.

Rushing him into it might not be the best thing.
