Is 7/16" OSB good enough for Exterior on a Garage with 16" spaced studs?

  1. I'd suggest 3/4" T&G OSB but 7/16" is certainly "good enough".  I guess the key is: is it for "a garage" or for "your garage".


  2. yes,it is sufficient,its what is used in most new construction today,even when the exterior walls are framed at 24 " o.c.

    3/4 is complete overkill,and extremly expensive,not to mention the fact that it makes your wall 1/4 thicker,and hence changes all door and window reveals.not a good idea unless you have more money than sense.

  3. Totally agree with Dale H. If used for sheathing then fine. But not if it is your finished product. Siding or brick need to go over it.After applying a suitible moisture barrier.

  4. with nothing covering it? then no, osb is only good if its covered with something.By something, I mean more than a coat of paint, perhaps some type of siding material.For exterior walls being covered with a more weather resistant material 7/16 is fine.
