  1. It's a definition question. We say that a number is less than another number if it is further left on the number line and that a number is greater than another number if it is further right on the number line.

    -7/8 is to the left of -5/8 on the number line; therefore, -7/8 is said to be less than -5/8.


  2. -7/8 is less than -5/8.

    If they were positive numbers, the answer would be the opposite.  The negitivity of the numbers makes the difference.  

  3. -7/8 is less than -5/8 because if we add 7/8 to both sides of the inequality we get the equivalent one 2/8 > 0, which is clear.
