I would prefer folks who used to sell bikes and know the markup on them to answer this... Thanks!

  1. I don't sell bikes, but I'll take a shot.  I think it's best to know what the actual selling price is rather than the 'out the door' price.  It sounds great and upfront to hear the price in one lump sum, but I think it kind of confuses the deal and keeps you from negotiating harder.

In my area, the tax rate in Los Angeles is 8.25% so just the tax would be $775.41 if you pay MSRP ($9399).  I don't know what the license fees are, but at least it looks like they are selling it a little below list ->  $9399 + 775.41 = $10174.41

That's a $525 difference from the $9649 price you were given, but not considering the + or - tax rate in your area and license fees.

You might be able to do better if you negotiate the actual price of the bike.  It also helps to know tax and fees separate - take your time to do the math in front of them.  Also, the best information is to know the price they paid, their invoice price (like you mentioned).  This is the most difficult to get and the only place I know is in the link below, but you have to pay $15 to get it.

    Hope that helps, good luck.

  2. Go on cycletrader.com and see what that bike is going for.

To me that is way too high. I can get a new R1 for that money

  3. If the MSRP is $9,399 and you end up having to pay only $250 total for taxes, license, prep fees, shipping etc for a total price of $9,649, then that sounds like a great price to me.

What the dealer could charge you for all the actual taxes and all those other fees would easily bring the bike to over $11,000

  4. Buy a 12 pac and get the bike. The price is fine.
