My 10 Year Old Daughter wants another pet, she already has goldfish and takes wonderful care of them! But i was wondering if another pet would be too much responsibility, i think she could do it, i just want some opinions.

She either wants a hampster, snake(a small one), a frog, or a small bird. which one should i let her get? considering expenses, amount of care and play needed....

any other suggestions for pets?

thanks =]

  1. WHY DID YOU REMIND ME OF MY ANOREXIC FROG THAT DIDN'T EVER EAT, AND DIED OF STARVATION?!  WHY?!

  2. I think a hamster or a bird would be cute. Snakes and frogs will be too hard to find if they esscape.

  3. For a 10 year old a Gerbil would be a great pet.

Check out www.petfinders.com to find one near you that needs a home.

  4. this question should be for your daughter -not Yahoo.  all of the things you explained are for your family conversation.

  5. The snake takes less responsiblity, although feeding them can be "gross" Their "cages" (aquariums) don't need cleaning as much as a hamster's or a bird which need to be cleaned daily.  The only problem with feeding snakes is you have to feed it live baby mice....Good luck with that.

  6. Hampster - They are cute, but need weekly cage-cleaning, twice-daily feeding, and daily water refilling. They also need extra investment in the way of exercise toys. They are very loveable though, and great for kids.

Snake - Snakes can be a little expensive to buy, but are very easy and cheap to take care of once you have the necessary equipment. You'll need a lidded tank and a heat lamp for most snakes. You can buy frozen mice to feed them. They need feeding about once a week, and are tons of fun to play with.

Frog - I don't know too much about frogs, though I'd assume they're cheap to buy. You'd feed them insects, probably daily. I don't know how lovable a frog would be, and they'd need to get exercise somehow.

Bird - Birds, you need a large cage. You also need weekly cage cleaning, and daily food and water. Birds can be loud, and often have bad temperments [In my experience].

In my opinion, the hampster or the snake is the best bet. Perhaps, you and your daughter could go to a pet store together and look into the options.

    Good luck!

  7. For your daughters age, I would suggest a hamster. Hamsters are great, but they are kind of stinky, so make she keeps his/here cage super clean. They are pretty low maintence though and I LOVED mine. They get active at night and like to run in their wheel.

Snakes are great, we have 2, but be prepared because they need a special set up. You need to make sure they have a heat source and that their tank is at the right temp. for the breed. Also, they eat live prey; pinky mice (babies), etc. We trained ours to eat frozen ones, which we have found to be much easier. If your daughter wants an animal she can play with, a snake is not a good choice. They are generally more for "show."

Frogs are great too, but again, require the special set up and really shouldn't be held all that much.

Lastly, I am not a big fan of people who keep birds. It's my personal opinion that birds do not belong in cages. They have wings for a reason. :)

My daughter's first pet was a rat. They are very easy to care for and have fun personalities! Princess was her best friend. They are generally docile too, which is nice!

  8. Hamsters- really cheap but they start to smell bad and if you dont hold it for a minimum of 30 mins a day it will start to bite and it hurts!!!!!

Snakes- good but they require a big tank you just change water everyday and once a month feed it a mouse but you have to change temperature everyday oh and you have to play with it everyday or it will become aggresive!

Frog- frogs are good and inexpensive but every week will she be able to feed it crickets!? Im 11 and not my favorite thing to do!

Bird- birds are the best pets (my opinion) i have (had) a parakeet but my mom didnt know her wings werent clipped and put the cage outside to get some fresh air and it got out but it lives in the tree in our backyard! (Started a family) but the coketeils are the best they're really friendly and you can play with them alot! But you dont have to if you want it to just sit in the cage buy two but if youll play with them you can get one! heres the picture of the one we bought!
