Is Adelaide better then Melbourne?

I am living in Melbourne at the moment. Always have the interests coming/moving to Adeliade, due to the cheaper living costs and environment.

However I would like to know more about the real Adelaide. The transport, people, culture, cost of living, weather, employment, entertainment etc

I was born in Hong Kong myself, lived in Sydney for 20 years. Hated Sydney, the people, public service, transport, the lot. I now lived in Melbourne for 8 months and paying high rents just like Sydney.

Anyway I heop to hear from someone esp the locals or those whose lived in both cities, but all commnets are welcomed.

Thanks in advance

  1. I like melbourne more

  2. adelaide is the best for retirees, it's a very very slow city (that reflects in it's public transport). if you are not working and living of the benefit then adelaide is o.k. otherwise it's way too boring and small for my liking.

  3. It does really does depends what you are personally after. You mentioned that you lived in Sydney for 20 years, can I assure you that Adelaide (as nice as a city it is to live), is very different to Sydney (Adelaide has 1.1 million people about ¼ of the size of Sydney) and very very different to Hong Kong  (with 7 million people). Sydney (and Melbourne to a lesser of an extent) are more busy & bustling cities (and of course Hong Kong much more so), Adelaide on the other hand is a laid back quiet city, there is plenty to do, and if you are not a boring person you should never have any reason to get bored living there, but the biggest differences between Adelaide and say Sydney and Melbourne is the pace of life, and for many people they see this as a more quality lifestyle, also comparatively Adelaide is a more affordable place to live. Just another point, if you found Sydney’s public transport bad, you will not find Adelaide’s public transport any better (though other services are probably better), as you mentioned you're originally from Hong Kong, which I believe has the best public transport system in the world, and there is nothing like this in Australia!

In Adelaide Entertainment & arts are plentiful, great inexpensive food, café’s, heaps to do esp. in Summer and Autumn, ease of accessibility which is a bonus to getaway to locations like the many small towns / villages in the surrounding hills, the nation’s best wine regions and the beaches, makes the city pretty special. The climate's pretty good, not much rain though and can get pretty hot in late summer. I reckon the eastern, south eastern, south western and beach side suburbs are the pick of the suburbs to live in, like all cities you’ll pay more in better suburbs. Though ultimately you’ll have to make a decision based on your own preferences, maybe take a visit, especially if you have a friend to show you around, (though I personally find visiting a city does not always reflect what it’s like to live there). All the best, you can have a look at the 2 links below, they may be of some help.

  4. the people are nicer their

  5. Adelaide is much better for the cost of living than Melbourne would be. I'm not entirely sure about people from Melbourne, but generally people from Adelaide are pretty good. Culture is pretty good, and as long as your willing to look there are some festivals and things like that which are really entertaining (the local bands are great!). Employment is generally good as well. I don't actually know anybody here who wants a job, but can't find one.

The weather really relies on your personality. If you love beaches then you'll love the heat since it basically is the perfect summer situation, but there isn't much rain. Which also unfortunately means water restrictions (though I must say I've never had a problem with them). Public transport in Adelaide is bad, and the city is a pain to find a park in when driving.

I've lived in Adelaide all of my life so I'm probably a bit biased towards it, but it was a great place to grow up. I'd really suggest that you come down to Adelaide for a few weeks on vacation and see if you like it yourself. Hope I was some sort of help!

  6. Well if you like BORING, bad Public Trans, lack of entertainment, then come down, the weather is good, the people are are the same as Melb, cost of living is cheaper, its just boring, They dont like change and there is not really much to do, like i said its boring.

  7. I think Adelaide is better than Melbourne.

I was born and lived in Melbourne for 19 years then came to Adelaide for Easter one year and fell in love with the slower lifestyle and friendliness of the people. I shifted back to Adelaide 6 weeks later.

I have lived here now for 36 years. I visit Melbourne semi-regularly to visit family but am always glad to get back to Adelaide.

It is like a large country town in atmosphere.

  8. it's all a matter of taste , come for a little while , i'm sure you'll fall in love with the place.

ps i wasn't born here ,but it's MY HOME TOWN.
